We make jokes about pedophilia and people being pedophiles all the time, but lately someone I met on another Internet forum got me thinking... why are pedophiles like they are?
Personally, I think pedophilia is kind of like a sexual orientation. An incredibly messed up one, but still. I do not believe in having sex with children and I find it repulsive that any grown woman or man would do such a thing to someone that doesn't even understand what is happening to them. So I'm not making excuses, at all.
However, all of that aside, why couldn't it be another sexuality? Some people like men or women, some people like both, some people like horses; people are attracted sexually to all kinds of things, why are children any different? Now, I'm not denying that there aren't people out there who are genuine sick; that's a given, really. I mean, we can't help (usually) what we find appealing, can we?
After all, in school we have to read a book called In Cold Blood, and one of the characters, Dick Hickock (who is, by the way, a real person), is sexually attracted to kids. He is ashamed that he is attracted to little girls, but he can't help it.
So what are your thoughts on pedophilia?
